Rezumat: The border regions of South-East Europe represent some of the most dynamic and culturally diverse spaces within the contemporary European landscape, where ethnic, linguistic, religious and historical particularities continue to shape social interaction, regional cooperation and identity construction. In the context of globalization, migration dynamics and European integration, intercultural dialogue and diversity management have become essential instruments for social cohesion, inclusion and societal resilience. This paper examines the role of interculturalism and multiculturalism in border areas, with particular emphasis on the Romanian–Hungarian border space and the broader East-Central and South-East European context. Using a qualitative, interdisciplinary design that combines literature review, policy analysis, comparative reasoning and an illustrative case study, the research assesses how cultural diplomacy, intercultural education and institutional cooperation can reduce fragmentation, combat stereotypes and strengthen mutual trust. It argues that diversity is neither inherently a security threat nor automatically a social asset: outcomes depend on the quality of governance, everyday interaction and inclusive institutions. Intercultural dialogue should therefore be understood not merely as a cultural or educational dimension, but as a strategic component of societal security and European integration in border regions.
